Commemorating Hitler’s birthday, the National Socialist Movement (NSM) of America marched to raise awareness about illegal immigration this past Saturday (April 19, 2008). This past weekend was also Passover in the Jewish calendar.
The NSM’s demonstration route ran directly down Constitution Avenue and up to the US Capitol. Over the course of some hours (11am until 3pm), approximately twelve city blocks around the National Mall were blocked off and traffic diverted for this action.
Some hundreds of law-enforement personnel were on hand, both District police and federal (US Park Police, other agencies) officers. By my count, there were 35 to 40 Nazi demonstrators.
Numerous groups were out to protest the NSM’s march and right to assemble.
Many tourists, out to bask in the sunshine of a beautiful Spring day and catch the tail-end of the Cherry Blossoms, were unaware of the day’s proceedings and caught entirely off-guard by the demonstration(s).
